Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Nikkor Wide Angle Zoom Lens Review

Covering a wider position than Nikon's previous standard f/2.8 constant aperture standard zooms, the 24-70mm is an extremely versatile top drawer optic. Just like their other up-to-date professional contacts, the 24-70mm sports a raft of features including internal focusing, a Quiet Wave motor for fast and virtually quiet focusing with full-time manual override, ED glass to lessen chromatic aberrations and Nano very coating which promise to create the lens more resistant against ghosting and flare.

Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8G ED NIKKOR: Features and handling

This new lens feels more compact and lighter than its predecessor, but it's large. Despite its size, it balances perfectly on my small D700 without or with the Megabytes-D10 grip attached. A sizable hood is provided which attaches towards the body from the lens permitting the leading element to maneuver backwards and forwards within the hood with respect to the focal length selected. The lens is longest in the 24mm setting getting shorter towards 50mm along with bit more time again at 70mm. The zoom barrel is nice simple to rotate, only requiring an easy touch to create it moving. On my small review sample the mechanism is nice smooth between 24mm and 50mm but appears to grind just a little at longer focal measures. This may be a quirk of the particular model though.

Focus is carried out internally, therefore the front element doesn't rotate whatsoever. The Quiet Wave motor guarantees focus is accomplished amazing quick, and precisely as well. The lens didn't have trouble maintaining with erratic subjects when installed on a D700.

Metal can be used for almost all the development so the lens feels reassuringly solid and great. Actually I'd go so far as to state it's been a pleasure by using this lens because of the handling and it is performance.

Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8G ED NIKKOR: Performance

With this review, the lens was examined on the 12Mp Nikon D700 using Imatest.

Through the zoom range the 24-70mm produces good resolution within the image center using the corners being less sharp, but appropriate for most programs. Preventing lower to f/4 creates a massive rise in resolution within the center resolution in the wider focal measures. This lens is extremely, very sharp within the center. The resolution in the edges from the image area still improve at these shorter focal measures until around f/11, in which the lens provides the most even resolution over the image area.

At 70mm, clearness gets to be more uniform over the image area, and also the resolution f/2.8 really enhances just a little. Choosing f/4 still provides the greatest resolution within the center, just like shorter focal measures. Overall, the correct answer is impressive, despite the corners lagging behind the center resolution somewhat. This lens provides images with real bite for them, most likely partly lower towards the excellent contrast created with this optic, which will help with the look of sharpness.
